The
date Palm grows many leaves each year.

All with
thorns. In January we de-thorn so that we can
climb
into the center of each producing female palm.
Male palms are also de-thorned.
They
bloom first.
We
collect the pollen when the female palms are ready.
We
distribute the pollen in a variety of ways.
Four
weeks after the last pollination the clusters are tied down to
the closest leaf.
In
July the leaves in and around the date clusters are pruned and
net bags are placed around the dates to protect and catch dropping
dates.

Certain
types of dates get paper only covers, others netting only and
some get both.
